Coffee Consumption May Prevent symptomatic gallstone Disease

by Shirley Yeung

Researchers from the Health Professionals follow-up study evaluated 46,008 men that was from ages 40 to 75 in 1986 to see if coffee consumption would decrease the risk of symptomatic gallstone disease in men. During the study of 404,166 people, the combined years of all the men had lived since 1986, 1081 men reported symptomatic gallstone diseases. Of the 1081 reported cases, 885 men had a cholecysectomy. After adjusting for other known or suspected risks, researchers compared men who did not consume regular coffee in 1986 and 1999, to men who consistently drank 2 to 3 cups of regular coffee a day. The adjusted relative risk for men who drank coffee daily was 0.60. All coffee brewing methods showed a decreased risk. The risk of symptomatic gallbladder disease decreased with the increase of caffeine intake. People who drank decaffeinated coffee didn't decrease their risk of Gallbladder disease.
