Earth Day Article
Jeffrey Lucas

When Earth Day first became about, it was thought that the new and far ranging technologies would improve the quality of life within the confines of the world. However this has not proved to be the case. As has been recently found these new technologies have contributed too much of the present problem and this was the focus of Earth day 2005. The focus of earth day 2005 was the problem of what is now referred to as ewaste. This is all of the old computers and cells phones and things that have been dumped and are now contribution to the environmental pollution that plagues so many developed countries and even third world countries.

The main problem is that as technology gets better it is increasingly smaller and thus viewed by the public as more disposable. However the opposite is true. These newer technologies put a greater strain on the environment increasing both visual pollution and the pollution the water table. The problem also lies within the electronic companies themselves by not heavily advertising that these new technologies can be recycled. Then there is the fact that a lot of the materials used in high tech electronics like gold and lead must be mined and this adds to the defacing of the environment.

However so what do we learn from all of this. We learn that we should recycle the old phones and technology. Call up these companies and make them setup up recycling programs. The goal is to save our earth by not only helping us to live easier with new technology but also to keep the earth for millenniums to come.
