All about Earth Day by Senator Gaylord Nelson
Tiphanie Wong
Since April 22, 1970. Earth Day has been recognized as a significant and remarkable event. It took numerous years for Senator Gaylord Nelson to create this day. Throughout his career, Nelson struggled to include environment issues into the world of politics. After witnessing the events at a conversation speaking tour in the summer of 1969, Nelson came up with a brilliant idea. “Why not organize a huge grassroots protest over what was happening to our environment?” The result was a day that has now made a lasting impact on the world. On April 22,1970, 30 million demonstrators including thousands of schools and communities participated in the event. In 1995 president bill Clinton awarded Nelson with the presidential Medal of Freedom. The highest honor given to civilians in the United States. In an October 1993 issue, American heritage Magazine stated that “on April 22,1970, Earth Day was help, one of the most remarkable happenings in the history of America”
