Fruit flies help find cure for cancer
Daniel Yuabov
Who could ever imagine that a simple creature such as the lowly fruit fly could ever compare to such a complex creature as the human being? Humans are bigger, stronger, and smarter than fruit flies. Then why are scientists using such a simple organism to help them find the cure for cancer? The answer is that fruit fly genes are very similar to fruit fly genes. Scientists have been studying the genes of the fruit fly for many years, and comparing them to human genes. Researchers have recently found a fly gene called Yorkie which has a direct counterpart in humans called YAP. By experimenting with flies, scientists have found that the Yorkie gene has the ability to regulate size of organs, making it a "primary culprit" as a cancer-causing gene. If organ size is not regulated in proportion, then cancer occurs. This leads scientists to believe that an irregularity in the YAP gene can lead to cancer in humans. Who would have thought that humans and flies were so similar? Scientists are now experimenting with the gene found in flies called Hippo. They have concluded that an irregularity, or absence, of this gene leads to the development of tumors. They are trying to find a gene similar to Hippo in humans. Flies and humans are genetically similar. Flies are helping scientists find out what can cause cancer. Maybe in the future scientists will be able to find a cure for cancer with the help of a fruit fly.
