New Strides Made in the Field of Ballistics
Daniel Lee
Ever since Calvin Goddard’s time, the field of ballistics has been a major tool in criminology. Currently, bullets are matched by viewing them under a comparison microscope. However, researchers are now trying to further improve the matching system with the creation of unfired bullet replicas that look like they have been fired. With these replica bullets, analysts would be able to more easily calibrate their equipment. By using these replicas, police would not have to retrieve records from other states if a bullet does not show up in their own database, thus eliminating any loss of time during an investigation. The new system also provides more accuracy. For example, when a bullet is fired from a gun, it can get dinged by the gun making it hard to be compared. Also, constant firing can create alterations in the striation marks. The newly developed replica bullets would thus eliminate these once inevitable errors.
