Ballistics, a Flawed System?
Daniel Lee
The criminal investigation system has relied on the chemical matching of bullets as a means to provide evidence for the past thirty years. However, scientists have recently disproved this popular technique. Chemical matching is done by breaking down bullet fragments and looking at their chemical make up. However, scientists discovered that this system was not accurate at all. During the tests conducted, scientists found that many bullets that came from the same lead melting pot could be considered as matching. As a result, researchers concluded that chemical matching can not precisely match two bullets. This came out as a bit of an outrage since chemical matching has been used as significant source of evidence in many cases. As a result, many people have been falsely accused of crimes they never committed and are now serving sentences in prison, for faulty techniques.
