DNA Evidence: The Key to Solving the Crimes of the Past

David Alvarez

They say what’s old is new again. Today it seems that in the world of forensic science, DNA evidence and analysis is what keeps the past alive. Nearly every week there is another miracle of modern science, the criminals of the past are uncovered by DNA tests. Take for example the case of the “Bus Stop Rapist”. A man who went on a string of murders and rapes during the early 80’s in the Seattle area. Until recently the identity of this murderer was unknown, but thanks to the DNA records of victim Angelita Axelson, Bryan L. Gelenaw was found to be the murderer. These miraculous discoveries have become commonplace in forensic investigations. The advent of DNA tests in 1980’s has helped law enforcement officials link suspects to victims and crime scenes which in previous years would have been impossible. DNA investigation is one of the most exciting aspects of forensic science, certainly the use of this technology has and will continue to benefit society.
