Insects and The Forensic Investigator

Ho-Ming Chiu

Through the use of insects, forensic investigators are able to pinpoint a victim's cause of death. In some cases, insects are the killers themselves. Wasps and bees can inject venom through their sting. Some who are sensitive and allergic to this venom can die if not treated in time. Certain chemicals such as cocaine, heroin, and mercury can be traced in maggots colonized in the carcass. These chemicals help determine the cause of drug related deaths.
