While reading a mystery novel, we are not always aware that there are guidelines. I became aware of these guidelines when I attended a lecture on mystery novels. After attending this lecture, I would like to share these guidelines with you.
First of all, let's start with the novel itself. Mystery novels do not always have to have dramatic scenes, such as helicopters, drugs, the mafia, etc…look for simple philosophy!! Long ago, our "Sherlocks" were not expected to have relationships. Today, this has changed! You can now find out main characters completely submerged in full-fledged relationships that seem to be part of the plot. However, you can usually discount the personal stuff while trying to solve the mystery.
Now, the book itself can be taken apart. ¼ of the way through the novel, you have met the characters and have experienced the murder. Now what? Can you figure it out? Can you catch me? ½ way through the novel, you are submerged in the plot and have a million theories as to who's who and who has done it. Are you right? Read on! ¾ of the way through, the 1st definite connection is made. Also, there is always a bombshell thrown in
here…everything changes and starts to unravel. This is your chance to check your sleuthing skills. About 20 pages before the end, everything comes together and is revealed. Well, how did you do?
Mystery novels are designed to bring us into the plot. You are always being confused while you think that you are being led to an answer. Many times, you suspect, then clear, then suspect again. This is all part of the fun. Well, theses are your guidelines. Read and enjoy!
