Crime Scene Video Taping Guide

Tina Chiu

Video taping is often used as a way to display the evidence of a crime. The techniques for videotaping should be done in the following ways:
Investigators should first start the video with a brief introduction. Valuable information that should be included is the date, time, location, type of crime scene and any other important introductory information. A brief description of the rooms and evidence and a basic diagram are also useful. The crime scene should then be taped but without any audio recording. When taping the crime, scene, the surrounding area should be included. Investigators should use different angles and close ups to show the different layouts. They should also span the entire area and use different techniques such as panning and zooming.
