DNA Used To Track Rapist

Edward Liew

The Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS has connected serial rapist John Scieszka to a 1993 Roswell rape that investigators believe may have been his first in Georgia. Currently serving life in prison, Scieszka has already been proven guilty for raping three women at Emory University's Lullwater Park and in 1993 and 1994 and five women from the University of Georgia in 1995 and 1996. In February, Roswell police heard from the State Crime lab investigators who were comparing DNA of convicted sexual offenders to DNA collected in about 1,000 unsolved rapes in Georgia since 1992. The CODIS system links DNA databases from over 20 states. This system has already helped to match the DNA of imprisoned offenders to five unsolved cases in Georgia.
