Student Organization / S.O.
The Student Organization (S.O.) brings students together to them a venue to voice their opinions and influence the school. The Senate, the first level of student government, meets monthly for a double period. Each social studies class elects a Senator. The Senator's job is to offer opinions on proposals, inform their classes about what is happening in school, and to tell the Senate about issues students consider to be important. The President of the Student Organization brings suggestions from the Senate to the major student governing body, The Cabinet. The cabinet meets daily to discuss and carry out programs in the school. At the end of each school year, the next year's officers choose 20-25 of the applicants to serve on the cabinet for the next school year. The Advisory Board is made up of one elected representative from each grade, the S.O. Secretary, teachers, administration, parents, and alumni. The S.O. Vice President chairs this board. Its purpose is to examine and discuss school issues and to advise the principal of how these different groups feel about various issues, as well as to put programs into effect. The S.O Vice President also heads the Nutritional Council which deals with issues related to the cafeteria from the food served to recycling. The Senior Council is made up of one representative from every senior homeroom. Senior Council meets weekly to discuss issues affecting the senior class from senior spirit day, to the prom, to graduation. S.O. officers, Junior, Senior, and Grade Representatives are elected at the end of the school year. Freshman and Sophomore Representatives, Senators, and Senior Council Representatives are elected at the beginning of the year in which they will serve. Co-Extracurricular and Extra-Curricular Activities Clubs usually meet weekly throughout the school year. Students often devote significant time and energy to clubs of their choice. Many students demonstrate leadership skills as club officers. Clubs and teams allow students to relax, have fun, and get to know fellow Sciencites in a social setting. Clubs can range from ethnic clubs to clubs of organizations representing particular ideas and interests. Each year new clubs are chartered.
