Student Rules and Responsibilities
Chancellor's regulations and Board of Education policy state:
- Students may not wear hats or head gear in the building. (Religious observance
and health-related head wear is exempted, with appropriate documentation submitted
to your guidance counselor.)
- Students may not play games of chance on school property.
Building-Wide:
- Appropriate dress is required for all students (see below).
Cafeteria:
The entire student population over several periods shares the student cafeteria.
It is important that all students enjoy a clean, healthy, and safe environment
where they can relax and socialize. Toward that end the following guidelines
must be observed:
- Students must report to the cafeteria during their lunch period.
- Students who have a free period are to report to (1) the Study Hall (auditorium),
or (2) may serve on a squad and earn service credit, or (3) the Library.
- Students may eat in the cafeteria or the courtyard, but may not take food
out of the cafeteria to other parts of the building.
- Students who are a part of special programs that require eating lunch elsewhere
in the building must obtain a special pass from the faculty advisor.
- Wherever students eat, all garbage must be placed in appropriate containers.
Tables must be cleaned and the area surrounding your luncheon table must be litter
free.
ALL STUDENTS MUST CARRY THEIR PROGRAM AND ID AT ALL TIMES.
Dress Code:
To preserve a sense of professionalism and a positive educational environment
it is important that a certain standard of dress be maintained:
- Clothing should not be distracting or offensive to other members of The Bronx
Science community.
- Clothing that degrades religion, race, or sexuality is prohibited.
- Clothing that promotes drug use or offensive language is not allowed in the
building.
- Undergarments must not be visible, and tops and bottoms of outer garments
must meet or overlap. The above dress code has been developed in consultation
with the S.O. Cabinet, the UFT Steering Committee, the Parents' Association, and
the School Leadership Team.
Guidelines for Student Responsibilities
Learning is the number one priority in our school. These policies have been
designed to maximize the teaching-learning experience and to provide for the
safety and welfare of the school community.
- All students are expected to
attend school every day and to report to all of their scheduled classes. Absence
notes should be signed by a parent/guardian and shown to each teacher on the
first day of return after the absence. Students should be mindful that if they
are not in class, for any reason, they miss important schoolwork and are not
able to participate in their class's ongoing educational activities. This may
be reflected in students' grades.
- I.D. cards with your attached student schedule must be carried at all times
to protect all of us against the possibility of intruders. An I.D. card must
be produced when obtaining late passes and borrowing library books. You must
be prepared to show your I.D. card or any other form of I.D. upon request by
any staff member or the truancy patrol.
- During an unassigned period it is strongly recommended that you serve on one of the school's squads: the Administrative Office (room 135D), departmental offices, library, Dean's Office, Guidance Office (room 035), General Office (room 135), laboratory squad, etc. In this way you will be helping the school and at the same time accumulating service credit toward Arista membership as well as service for college applications.
- At the beginning of an unassigned period you report to a squad, the library
or the study hall and remain there for the period. Do not use the Gym or enter
the Locker Room. Liability laws prohibit the use of Gyms during unassigned periods.
Wandering through the corridors disturbs instruction and is thus not permitted.
- We do not condone your leaving school property during an unassigned or lunch
period. The school is safe and secure but this assurance cannot be given when
you are off school property. The handball courts are for use by physical education
classes.
- On a nice day, the campus yard is available to you during unassigned
periods 4, 5, 6, and 7. Since the yard adjoins a teaching wing it is crucial
that the noise level is kept down. Therefore, football and Frisbee games are
not permitted in the center of the campus.
- Students may not congregate on the steps in front of the main entrance since
this area is also adjacent to classrooms.
- Lateness - Students who come to school after the bell for their first class has rung, are late to school. Students who are late to school must get a record of lateness" from the school aide in the cafeteria. Subject class teachers will not allow late students into their classes without a late pass. You are expected in class within a minute or two of the time on the record of lateness.
Students must carry their Bronx Science ID Card and Student Schedule at all times.
The ID Card is checked upon entrance to school. The cafeteria entrance opens
at 7:30 am. Students not assigned to a 1st period class remain in the Cafeteria
until the bell for period 2 rings.
- Smoking Policy - New York City law prohibits smoking on school property,
including the sidewalks of the school building. Violation of this law may lead
to suspension.
